In celebration of National Stroke Awareness Month, the Nebraska
Cardiovascular Health Program and the Nebraska State Stroke
Association dedicated Saturday May 17th, as the 4th
Annual Strike Out Stroke Saltdogs game. Nebraska stroke survivors, friends,
family, and supporters cheered on the Saltdogs while
distributing Strike Out Stroke educational materials and
promotional items. Lincoln Saltdogs enthusiasts received
free t-shirts, brochures, posters, stickers and magnets,
as well as the famous Strike Out Stroke fans.
Special announcements and activities, including a tailgate
party prior to the game, focused on stroke education.
The evening with the Lincoln Saltdogs was one of several
statewide events for Strike Out Stroke, a Nebraska public
education campaign designed to raise awareness of stroke
warning signs. Campaign components include community Strike
Out Stroke baseball games held throughout the state; stroke
survivors telling their stories through the media; learning
activities designed for elementary and middle-school children;
and a campaign website: www.strikeoutstroke.org.
Stroke is the third leading cause of death in Nebraska,
killing more than 1,000 Nebraska residents each year. A
stroke can happen to anyone at any age. In fact, 20% of
all stroke deaths in Nebraska occur among residents under
the age of 75.
